Ever since the updates in 2018, you can not only take a screenshot of your Mac screen, but you can also take videos of it.

IOS devices are considered to be quite smooth in their working and features, and so you must know that taking screenshots is very easy on Mac.

You don’t have to worry about any restrictions or permissions for taking a snapshot. Just read this post, and you will find the different ways to record your Mac screen.

There are two different ways using which you can take Mac screenshots. The first one is via using the keyboard shortcuts, whereas the second method is by using snipping apps/tools or extensions. Below we have discussed these ways in detail for your knowledge.

1. Taking Screenshot On Mac with Shortcut Keys

Let us first find out about the keys that can be used for taking a screenshot of screen recording.

Shift+Command+3

The first easy way to screenshot your Mac screen is by pressing and holding the Shift, Command, and three buttons together. This shortcut is basically used to capture a shot of your entire screen. You can take a screenshot of your monitor with these keys or of multiple screens in case you are using two or more two monitors with your Mac.

Once the screenshot is taken, you will see a small image preview appear on the bottom right of your Mac. You can open the preview by clicking on it and can edit or crop it as per your requirement. If you don’t want the screenshot preview to appear, then you can disable it in the screenshot menu (find it in settings)

Shift+Command+4

If you don’t want to capture a shot of the complete screen, but only for a specific part, then you can use this short command. When you press and hold Shift, Command, and four together, your mouse changes from a cursor to a crosshair. You can drag any area of your screen with this crosshair and capture it.

You just have to drag and let go of the cursor once you have selected the area you want to capture. In case you have chosen the wrong area to capture, you can easily use the ESC key on your keyboard to cancel.

Using these three keys with a bunch of others can also help you unlock many unknown features on your Mac. One of them is Shift+Command+4 and then the spacebar, which allows you to capture a specific window open on your screen.

Shift+Command+6

There are different models and types of Mac computers. Well, not all of them have a touch bar which is quite a special feature. If you wish to take a screenshot of your touch bar, then you have to press and hold the Shift+Command+6 buttons. You can capture an image of everything in the touch bar.

2. Capture The Screen with Default Screenshot App

If you don’t want to use the shortcut keys or if a button from the short keys isn’t working on your Mac, then you can always use the screenshot application. The screenshot app is available on all modern and updated Mac devices. You might not have noticed, but the screenshot app is the floating camera icon at the bottom of the screen.

The screenshot app is enabled by default, but in case you cannot find it in the taskbar, then it means that it hasn’t been pinned or enabled on the Mac. You can open up the screenshot application by simply clicking on the Shift+command+5 button.

When you press and hold these keys, a small window (menu) opens up at the bottom of your screen. On the screen, you can easily see three icons using which you can take different kinds of snapshots. Use the capture option to take the image.

You can take a screenshot of the complete screen or a specific part section of a window by using the three options. Here you must know that right next to the screen capture options, you are going to see two icons that will allow you to record your Mac screen.

3. Install Third-Party Screen Recorder App

In case you are unable to use the above-mentioned two methods, then you can go for a third-party app.

You can find the Apple App Store on your MacBook. You have to open it and search for the best screenshot application. Multiple options would appear in the search results. Clean Shot, Cap-To, and Yac are the three most popular options that users prefer installing on their devices.

These are very easy to use, and this is because of their clean & intuitive interface. Even a layperson can learn how to take screenshots with these apps. You cannot only capture screenshots with third-party apps, but you can also record screens without any restrictions. You can also annotate and edit the captured content with the help of these apps.

Know that you can also record audio being played on the Mac along with the screen with third-party apps.

4. Get an Extension to Safari

Just like Chrome, you can also get browser extensions for Safari, which is the default browser of your MacBook. There are many screen-saving extension tools like the “Page Screenshot for Safari” that you can easily install and add with Safari.

By installing an extension, you can easily take screenshots of the sites or pages that are currently being viewed on the Mac. These extensions don’t only work on Mac but also on other iOS devices having Safari.

5. Use The Preview Tool to Take Screenshot

Most of you might not know, but the preview tool is the default utility that helps you open all kinds of visual content and pdf files on your MacBook. There are plenty of features of the preview tool other than opening images and files.

To take a screenshot with the preview tool, you have to follow these steps:

  • Open the preview app on Mac. In the file menu list, you will see the “take screenshot” option. You have to select it, and from the selection pane, choose your desired option.
  • Take a screenshot with your cursor and save it in your desired location after renaming it.
